Vijay Iyer Trio
Vijay Iyer Trio
Fri. Feb 11, 2011 | 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Dalton Center - WMU - Kalamazoo, MI
The Vijay Iyer Trio, with its transcultural line-up and relentlessly probing pianist-composer leading the way, represents both the culmination and the future of the jazz idiom. Eons of recorded music inform their approach to interpreting, or ‘reversioning’, other people’s songs. The complex post-bop, genre defying sound of the Vijay Iyer Trio reveals the possibility of new forms and a new set of standards that demonstrate the ensemble is well attuned to jazz traditions, as well as all types of modern music. A perennial critical favorite, pianist Vijay Iyer has repeatedly won multiple categories of the Downbeat magazine International Critics' Polls. The trio’s latest album, Historicity, has become one of the best-reviewed jazz albums of 2009, and is a 2010 Grammy® nominee for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
